Your Guide to Sober Travel in Los Cabos: Explore, Relax, and Rejuvenate

Los Cabos is renowned for its world-class nightlife and all-inclusive resorts, drawing party-goers from around the globe with its famed bar scene that doesn’t stop until dawn. But what if you’re seeking a different kind of getaway—one where relaxation and adventure don’t revolve around alcohol?

As a longtime resident of San José del Cabo, who has chosen an alcohol-free lifestyle for much of the past few years, I can assure you that Los Cabos has a quieter, gentler side just waiting to be explored. This destination is filled with enriching activities and experiences that cater to those seeking a sober vacation or simply a trip with more relaxation and fewer fiestas.

Whether you're visiting or thinking of making Los Cabos your home, you'll discover that the magic of this region extends far beyond its nightlife. Let me show you how to enjoy Los Cabos to the fullest, without ever touching a drop of alcohol.

Where to Stay

Choosing the right place to stay can set the tone for your sober trip. While many all-inclusive resorts in Los Cabos center around pool parties and boozy shenanigans, other hotels offer a more serene and health-focused experience. My tip? Look for accommodations that offer mindful activities and healthy alternatives to ensure your stay is enjoyable and you don’t get stuck with a bunch of college students partying on spring break.

  1. Nobu Hotel Los Cabos

Nobu Hotel Los Cabos tends to be a top choice among sober travelers and adults looking for a rejuvenating retreat. With its Japanese-style decor, laidback aesthetic, and focus on wellness, it’s a peaceful escape from the typical Cabo San Lucas party scene. The resort features a large fitness center, spa, and farm-to-table dining options with fresh, local ingredients, allowing guests to enjoy a healthy, alcohol-free experience if they choose. Its emphasis on relaxation and sophisticated comfort makes it an ideal choice for mindful travelers.

2. The Cape, a Thompson Hotel

Similarly, The Cape, a Thompson Hotel, offers a holistic wellness experience with luxury at every turn. This hotel has stunning ocean views with El Arco front and center. You’ll find plenty of wellness amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness center, yoga classes, wellness concierge, and a spa to unwind with hot and cold plunge pools. The hotel’s on-site restaurant, Manta, is run by award-winning chef, Enrique Olvera and has no shortage of fresh seafood dishes straight from the mar. Fish tempura tacos anyone? The Cape’s focus on well-being and downtime makes The Cape a fantastic option for those looking to enjoy a luxurious, health-conscious vacation.

3. Rent an Airbnb

I know that 5-star hotels and luxury resorts aren’t for everybody. When it comes to choosing where to stay during your sober Los Cabos vacation, renting an Airbnb is a flexible and affordable alternative. Whether you’re looking for a huge villa or a small, beachfront condo, you can choose an Airbnb that aligns with your budget.

Renting an Airbnb also means you’ll have access to a fully equipped kitchen (most of the time), giving you the freedom to prepare healthy meals and enjoy a more home-like atmosphere. Everyone has different reasons for not drinking but if you prefer to be far from the swim-up bars and people sipping on poolside cocktails, Airbnb is an excellent option. Renting somebody’s home is also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture rather than opting for a traditional resort experience.

For those wanting to be in the heart of Cabo’s lively downtown, properties near Medano Beach or in the Pedregal neighborhood offer easy access—though keep in mind that these areas are close to the nightlife scene. Alternatively, the Cabo Corridor is a fantastic option for those who prefer to be just outside the downtown core while still being a short Uber or bus ride away. This area is home to many English-speaking businesses, offering a convenient and comfortable stay.

If surfing is your thing, staying near Costa Azul Beach in San José del Cabo may be a better option. For a more cultural experience, the Centro of San José del Cabo is the home of the art district, filled with galleries and trendy restaurants.

What to Do

Engage in Mindful Activities

In Los Cabos, you can start or end your day with yoga and meditation on the beach or at one of the many studios in the area. My personal favorite is Baja Moon Yoga where the instructor, Dulce, offers a range of classes and retreats in Cabo San Lucas that cater to all levels of experience. There are so many great instructors here in Los Cabos but I’m confident that whichever class you choose, it will be a great way to enhance your sober travel experience while connecting with your mind, body, and spirit.

Outdoor adventures are another great way to stay active, sober, and connected with Mother Nature. Whether it’s hiking scenic trails, paddleboarding at La Playita, or horseback riding along the coastline, there are so many things to do and see. Or, if you have a taste for adventure, you can explore Cabo on the back of an ATV or zipline over the desert with Wild Canyon Adventures.

Explore the Culinary Scene

The culinary scene in Los Cabos is as diverse as its residents, although it can be challenging—almost downright impossible—to find restaurants that don’t serve alcohol. Fortunately, many establishments offer delicious alcohol-free drinks and artisanal mocktails.

One of my favorites is Jardín Secreto Restaurante (or "Secret Garden") in the San José del Cabo art district. They have fantastic mocktails, including the refreshing "Naranjada," a blend of freshly squeezed orange juice and sparkling or mineral water. To eat, choose from their menu of delicious Italian-style pizzas, creative salads, and a variety of Mexican fusion dishes.

Another great spot is SUR Cabo at Médano Beach in Cabo San Lucas. While not alcohol-free, their talented bartenders are happy to whip you up their famous "Rejuv Wellness Water.” This revitalizing drink combines lemon, unprocessed salts, ginger, mint, cucumber, and cinnamon—such a refreshing and health-conscious choice to pair with your meal.

Attend Community Events

A major perk about traveling to Los Cabos is that the community regularly holds events that cater to health enthusiasts. In addition to yoga classes, you can also find plenty of opportunities for group meditation, sound healing, cold plunges, and other holistic practices.

Many resorts and wellness centers also host retreats that focus on personal growth and relaxation, while local fitness classes and workshops are a great way to connect with others while focusing on your physical well-being.

It’s also a good idea to explore the local culture through festivals, art galleries, and farmers’ markets while you’re in town. These events are the perfect opportunity to experience Cabo’s many traditions and artistry, while galleries like Galeria de Ida Victoria and local markets allow you to learn more about the region’s artistic and artisanal heritage.
